Indigo Fabric Dyeing Workshop

  • Tamarack Waldorf School 1150 East Brady Street Milwaukee, WI, 53202 (map)

We are excited to offer a special fabric dyeing workshop at Tamarack's Fall Fest on Nov. 4th.
There are eight slots available for each time slot.
The fee is $25 to dye two larger silk scarves to be used as you wish (scarves, decor, play silks, or reusable gift wrap.)

At this workshop, we will be using indigo for dyeing.
The history of natural indigo dye is steeped in both tradition and mystery. For centuries, this vibrant blue pigment was extracted from the leaves of the indigofera plant, and its use can be traced back to many ancient civilizations, most notably Japan and West Africa. The process of turning green leaves into a deep, enduring blue hue was, and in some places still is, a closely guarded secret. Its production was often shrouded in ritual and mystique, with some communities even ascribing spiritual significance to the indigo dyeing process. While the chemistry of indigo extraction is now well understood, the aura of mystery that once surrounded it endures, and it remains a symbol of the enduring allure of natural dyes in an increasingly synthetic world.

The fabric dyeing workshop will be held in the Upper Grades Applies Arts Studio in the basement at Tamarack.
This workshop is geared toward adult participants.
